On the Argentinian side, the popular area for hiking is near the town called El Chalten. Most people arrive in El Calafate by plane and, then, take a bus to El Chalten.
This story is a true account of what happened one day on one of these buses.

————————

————————

The bus was on its way to El Chalten. Suddenly, the passengers stopped talking and quickly got out their cameras.

The view was breathtaking. From the front of the bus, in the distance, they could see the impressive Mount Fitz Roy.

The bus driver smiled as he watched everyone taking photos. He was a kind man. He parked the bus on the side of the highway.

Everyone got off the bus eagerly and took photos of the scenic view.

The passengers were very happy and thanked the driver. After ten minutes, everyone got on the bus and they continued towards El Chalten.

A short while later, the bus arrived in the small town. Everyone was even more amazed by the beautiful scenery that surrounded the town. It was truly breathtaking.

The bus started stopping at passengers hotels. One American tourist was unsure if his hostel was on the list.

He approached the driver. He asked if he knew where the Rancho Grande hostel was.

The driver didn’t speak any English, so the American asked, “¿Dónde esta el hostel Rancho Grande?

The driver replied in Spanish, “which hostel?”

To which the American replied, “Yes.”

“¿Usted sabe el nombre del hostel?

“Sí.”

Do you know the name of the hostel?”

“Yes.”

“¿Cuál es?preguntó el conductor.

Sí,respondió el turista.

“What is it?” asked the driver.

“Yes,” replied the tourist.

“… Can you tell me the name of it again, please?”

Yes.”

Bueno, ¿cuál es?

Sí.”

“Well, what is it?”

“Yes.”

“¿Conoce a mi esposa?

Sí.

Do you know my wife?

Yes.

[…]

[…]

It was at this point the driver understood the American tourist could speak a few words, but understood no Spanish.

The group of tourists arrived at their camping spot in Uganda.

It was a beautiful area with the mighty Nile River passing right by the camp ground.

It was a very basic campsite, with only tents and a bar, but the scenery made up for it.

After traveling for over a week through several countries in Africa, one of the tourists wanted to wash his clothes.

“Where can we wash our clothes?” asked David to the tour guide.

“There are no washing machines here,” replied the guide. “But some of the locals earn money by washing clothes for tourists. I can arrange it for you if you like. They will wash it for you while you go rafting tomorrow.
David was very happy to hear this. He takes great care of his clothes and always likes them to be clean, even in the middle of Africa.
A little later, a woman arrived and spoke to David. They negotiated a price and she took the clothes away.

The next day the tour group left early to ride the grade five rapids.

The rapids were huge. In the first ones they encountered the boat flipped. It was going to be a fun day.

While paddling through a smooth section, they came across local kids playing in the river water.

The tourists enjoyed the sight. They felt they were experiencing something very authentic.

Sadly for David, they saw something else that was very authentic… not only were the kids playing, the mothers were washing their clothes in the river.

They were twisting, rubbing and then slapping the clothes against the rocks.

“Hey, isn’t that your shirt?” said Chris to David.

David looked on in horror as his favourite shirt was bashed against the rocks over and over again.

At this moment David understood there really weren’t any washing machines.

People still washed the traditional way in the rivers, as they have for thousands of years.

When the next set of grade 5 rapids arrived, David forgot the worries of his clothes and enjoyed the thrills.

In the afternoon, the group arrived back at the camp. A short time later, the local lady appeared with Davids clothes.

David looked worried. He quickly inspected the clothes. Thankfully, they were all in good condition.

He was very relieved. He felt so happy he even paid a tip!

It was a warm sunny afternoon as the pedal taxi rider went to work.

He lived fifteen minutes away from the centre of town. Each day, he took tourists on scenic bicycle tours of the waterfront and the main town centre.

Siempre estaba ocupado y ganaba buen dinero.

He smiled as he rode along. He liked his job because he could exercise while working.

He was the only pedal taxi in town. He was always busy and earned good money.

He was especially popular with couples who were on holidays. He was close to the middle of town, only five minutes away.

He approached an intersection.

Suddenly, a car failed to stop at the stop sign.

The car drove through just as the pedal taxi went through the intersection.

There was a screeching of brakes as the car saw the pedal taxi at the last moment.

Bang! The car hit the pedal taxi and it went under the car.

The sound caught people’s attention and they came running from all directions.

The people saw the pedal taxi under the car and searched for the rider.

No podían encontrarlo.

They couldn’t find him. They were all puzzled.

Some people looked under the car, but still they couldnt see him.

The car driver was still in shock. He sat in his car motionless, with his hands still on the steering wheel.

The people didnt know it was the pedal taxi riders lucky day. The impact had thrown him through the air and away from the accident.

Luckily, he had landed on his feet, ten metres away without a bruise on him.

He walked back to the car. He told the people he was the pedal taxi rider.

At first, the people didn’t believe him.

He had to say it several times before the group of concerned people believed him. They couldn’t believe he was ok and neither could he!

Soon, the ambulance arrived and they too didn’t believe the story.

The pedal taxi was ruined by the car but the rider didn’t care. He was happy for the lucky escape.
